Live Simply

What does it mean to live simply?

For Feral Cheryl it means getting back to the basics of life…

Walking instead of driving, drinking fresh clean water ( not so simple!) and breathing clean air. Meditating instead of taking pharmaceuticals to deal with stress. Doing Yoga on the beach instead of driving to the gym to use complicated exercise machines. Playing in the sandpit with the kids, or running on the beach, or exploring a forest, instead of playing computer games.

It means recycling material from old clothes to make new ones, or selling used clothes at the market and buying from other stalls, or, if buying something new, getting rid of something she doesn’t need, so she doesn’t accumulate too much stuff.

For transport it means walking where she can, or riding a bike, taking public transport or hitching with a friend and sharing fuel costs.

For food, it means the less processed the better. Organically grown fruit, vegetables and herbs in season, home grown if possible. Definitely not Genetically engineered, not involving cruelty to animals, not using toxic pesticides and chemical fertilizers. She enjoys ‘slow food’ instead of fast food, and sharing meals with friends.

Using the library to borrow books and read newspapers. Finding ways to reuse, repair, recycle, or rejuvenate consumer goods.
Making natural remedies, soaps, creams and shampoos..candles, paper…the list goes on.

Of course, this is fantasyland for most real people, but being a doll, Feral Cheryl’s life is a fantasy, and this is the dream. The rest of us can try to make little changes to gradually simplify our lives.

  • One of Feral Cheryl’s favourite examples of a simple lifestyle…Steve Machell spends his working life making sandcastles on gorgeous beaches.

Run Wild

The ‘feral’ in Feral Cheryl is the wild child. The barefoot nature loving creature who can exist in the rainforests living very close to nature, the defender of wilderness.

Her wildness is also in her appearance…the dreadlocks, tattoos and piercings , perhaps more mainstream than wild as they were when she first emerged in 1995.

Her wildness is also in her actions. She is a social activist, championing the causes of the environment and human rights, standing up against the exploitation of cheap labour, and the excesses of the World Trade Organisation, and its emphasis on economics over humanity.

Feral Cheryl cheers for the Greenpeace protesters stopping illegally logged timber being shipped around the world, she supports the anti-nuclear demonstrators protesting against visits by nuclear warships, the anti-uranium protesters fighting to stop mining in world heritage areas and the green action against genetically modified food crops.

Her causes are many and varied. Like many an action hero she fights for truth and justice (but not ‘the American way’).

  • www.greenpeace.com A great site for keeping up to date with the heroic exploits of the greenpeace activists. For their every victory, our grandchildren will thank us.
